Research on the Rise

Faculty and students in the College of Arts & Sciences work together within and across disciplines on the crucial scientific, social and cultural challenges of our time.

The college is home to researchers who collaborate on topics including brain function, drug design, biostatistics, urban health and urban environments, language acquisition and development, gerontology, new media and digital arts, ethics and human rights and many others. In our labs and facilities, teams of faculty and students are working on a cure for cancer and on a universal influenza vaccine, discovering new stars and planets, understanding the connection between digital images and trans-cultural conflict, searching for clues about how climate change in the past has affected human evolution (and how that might inform future challenges for humanity) and exploring how to improve the lives of people living with dementia.

World-class Facilities

Collaborative University Research & Visualization Environment (CURVE)

In the heart of Georgia State’s downtown Atlanta Campus, the Collaborative University Research & Visualization Environment features a large-scale, touch-enabled video wall that is powerful enough to render complex models and visualizations, promoting interdisciplinary engagement, collaborative investigation and innovative inquiry.

Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA)

The flagship project of the Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy is its optical interferometric array of six telescopes on Mount Wilson, Calif. The CHARA Array is arguably the most powerful instrument of its kind in the world.

Center for Advanced Brain Imaging (CABI)

In midtown Atlanta, the Center for Advanced Brain Imaging is a shared core facility between Georgia State and Georgia Tech. CABI focuses on neuroimaging research, but also conducts studies using EEG, tDCS, TMS, and eye tracking. The core hosts a 3-Tesla Siemens Trio Magnetic Resonance Imaging System to allow the investigation of brain function and structure
