Sociology, B.A.

Sociology is the study of society, including identities, cultures, and institutions, and particularly the power dynamics that animate societal structures and social interactions.

Sociology uses data and theory to analyze the causes, processes, and consequences of social ideologies, social behaviors, institutional discourses, and institutional practices. Undergraduate students in our courses critically explore topics like race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, urbanization, health, illness, wealth, deviance, social problems, inequality and activism.

Program Details

High School Seniors and Recent Graduates
If you’re a senior in high school or if you graduated from high school within the last two years, you’ll apply to begin your bachelor’s degree program using Georgia State’s Common Application.

International applicants are those students who are in the U.S. on a non-immigrant visa (B-1, H-1, J-1, etc.), students who are living outside the U.S. and who will require an F-1 visa to study in the United States, students who are in the process of applying for Permanent Residency status but have not yet received the Permanent Residency card or students who have been educated outside the U.S.

In addition to the Program Degree Requirements, students must fulfill the College of Arts and Sciences Degree Requirements and the University Degree Requirements.

Students must complete 18 hours of courses appropriate to the major and 30 hours of courses within the major.

Sociology majors will learn to think critically, analyze social behaviors, communicate sociological knowledge, suggest innovative solutions to social problems and become active agents of social justice.



Our program's graduates are prepared for careers in research, data analysis and program evaluation; case work and counseling; law and public policy; public relations; social, health, and government services; education; community organizing, activism, and advocacy; and human resources.
