Mathematics, B.S./M.S.

This dual-degree program enables qualified students to enroll in graduate courses late in their undergraduate program and apply the coursework toward the bachelor’s and master’s programs. This allows students to earn a B.S. and M.S. in five years, typically saving a year of time and tuition dollars.

This B.S./M.S. program offers students the ability to get an M.S. in mathematics with a concentration in statistics or an M.S.  in mathematics with no concentration.

Students of mathematics and statistics enjoy high-paying job opportunities in a wide range of fields and are also well prepared for further study at the graduate level in mathematics, statistics and other fields.

Students must be formally accepted into the dual-degree program to take graduate courses as an undergraduate. Acceptance into the dual program does not constitute admission to the master’s program. Students must fulfill regular graduate admissions requirements and apply for the master’s program following college processes.

For more information about the dual program, including application instructions and program requirements, visit our Dual-Degrees page.

Math students are advised to consider carefully the career objectives they wish to pursue after graduation. A focused career objective can better enable students to tailor their program and may also suggest whether a co-op experience would be useful. Faculty who serve as academic advisers for majors can discuss choices and concentrations that are available to majors as well as whether to pursue the statistics concentration in the M.S. portion of the program.

Students in mathematics and statistics learn how to construct logical arguments, spot fallacies in widely accepted arguments, make quantitative models of real world situations, analyze data and find unifying mathematical structure in widely disparate phenomena. Students in the dual degree programs focus with greater depth and specialization on core topics in mathematics or statistics, providing deeper preparation for a career or for doctoral study.

Description

Careers

Mathematics prepares students for positions in business, industry and government, a career in the teaching of mathematics at the secondary level or continued study in mathematics or statistics leading to higher-level graduate degrees.
