Latin American Studies, Graduate Certificate

The Georgia State University Graduate Certificate in Latin American Studies is designed for students interested in developing and demonstrating knowledge and understanding of Latin American culture, economy, history and politics, as well as competence in one or more of the principal languages of the region.

The certificate is particularly well suited to students pursuing graduate degrees in anthropology, art history, business, history, world languages, political science, or sociology who have a concentration or a definite interest in Latin American and U.S. Latino/as who want to expand their understanding by taking related course work.

The certificate may be earned alone or in conjunction with a graduate degree program at Georgia State University

  • A BA/BS or graduate degree
  • Transcripts (one from each institution attended)
  • GRE NOT required
  • A statement of purpose
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Competence in Spanish or Portuguese *
  • Official TOEFL/IELTS Scores (international applicants only) **

* Competence in Spanish or Portuguese is demonstrated by completion of a four-semester sequence of the language at the undergraduate level, by completion of at least one graduate course in Spanish, or by an entrance language exam administered by the Department of World Languages and Cultures. Candidates who have completed the four semester sequence more than three years before applying for admission to the certificate program will be required to take the entrance language exam.

** Institutional code 5251 should be used for reporting TOEFL scores

The minimum requirements for the certificate are 15 graduate-level hours in courses with significant content addressing Latin America or U.S. Latino/as and a grade of B or better in each course. These courses must be selected from at least two different academic departments.

For those students enrolled in a master’s degree program at Georgia State University, two courses from the student’s master’s degree may be used towards the certificate.

Students will gain a broad knowledge and understanding of Latin America and U.S. Latino/as that will help prepare them to work or study in Latin America or to work with individuals and groups of U.S. Latino/as or people of Latin American origin in the United States.
