Chemistry, M.S., Concentration in Chemistry Education with Teacher Certification

• A baccalaureate degree in Chemistry or a related field from an accredited college or university.
• Undergraduate academic transcript.
• 3.00 GPA minimum on all undergraduate work attempted in which letter grades were awarded
• A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 or higher for International Applicants unless exempt (See FAQs linked below for information about exemptions)
• Written responses to five short-essay prompts that appear in the application.
• At least two letters of recommendation from people familiar with the student’s work and background.
• Passing score on GACE Program Admission Assessment or qualify for exemption (i.e. GRE, SAT, ACT)
• Applicants will need to complete the Georgia Educator Ethics Assessment to meet certification requirements in Georgia. For more information and how to register, visit Georgia Educator Ethics Assessment.

• 18 hours of graduate level Chemistry coursework.
• 21 hours of Education coursework and practica.
• Each student is required to develop a digital dossier throughout the program, which documents his/her growth and learning. Portfolios will be evaluated in the fall (midpoint) and spring (final) of the cohort program sequence. To be approved for certification, the student must earn a passing score on all required elements of the portfolio.
• Foreign Language or Research Skill. Research skill coursework may include (but is not limited to) nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, molecular modeling, computer language, technical writing, statistics or electronics. A reading proficiency in a foreign language may be used to satisfy the language requirement. Students may demonstrate a reading proficiency by passing the appropriate examination.

Master's students in the Department of Chemistry typically receive a tuition waiver and a stipend, meaning students can complete this program without taking on a significant financial burden.

The goals of this degree program include:

• Expanding and deepening students' chemistry knowledge
• Developing tools for science teaching and learning
• Understanding more about teaching students from diverse backgrounds

Students in this degree program will receive expertise in chemistry content knowledge through the courses in chemistry while simultaneously taking courses in the College of Education and Human Development to meet the requirements for teaching certification in the State of Georgia.

The chemistry portions of the program are overseen by the Department of Chemistry and the education and teaching certification requirements are overseen by the Department of Middle and Secondary Education in the College of Education and Human Development.
