Sebastian Rand focuses on the major figures of German Idealism (especially Hegel) and their various attempts to understand the goals, methods, and results of the natural sciences, both on their own and in relation to other areas of philosophy and culture more generally. So far, his research has concentrated on their interpretations of mathematical physics (the topic of his current manuscript project), with a more recent turn toward considering their views on biology. His interest throughout is in understanding how to both distinguish and integrate naturalness and normativity, an interest he also pursues in the context of more recent (“Continental”) philosophy.
