East Washington Community Walking Tour - Founder and Organizer
August 2010 - present
Conduct walking tours of the East Washington Community that was mapped out in 1912, re-configured through Urban Renewal in 1962, and re-structured for the third time in the late 1990s. The two hour tour covers the community’s history, culture, and heritage. Meeting at KIPP South Fulton Academy, formerly East Point Colored Elementary School, the tour highlights the historical African American neighborhood that emerged during the Jim Crow era. Participants see the six churches that provided spiritual guidance, the ball park where professional athletes such as John Milner practiced, and the business district that enticed African Americans to move from rural areas to East Washington for upward mobility. Participants can also travel to the Connally Family Burial Site where enslaved Africans were buried adjacent to their plantation owners.
