Over the past couple of years Dr. Larry Kiage’s research has focused on studying the history of climate change, vegetational changes and human impacts on East African environments, during the late Holocene through the examination of multi-proxy records of fossil pollen, diatoms, phytoliths, fungal spores, and microscopic charcoal in lake-sediment cores. In addition to paleoenvironmental research he also studies recent environmental changes, especially land use and land cover changes using remote sensing techniques.
Dr Kiage employs the use of remote sensing techniques to study environmental impacts due natural and anthropogenic forces. He has used remote sensing tools to study hurricane impacts on the environment in Louisiana and Alabama along the Gulf of Mexico. He has also used remote sensing techniques to study eutriphication problems in Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela.
Recently Dr. Kiage has been actively involved in the new and exciting science of paleotempestology, which employs geological proxy techniques, including overwash sand layers, diatoms, foraminifera, pollen, and phytoliths collected from coastal lakes and marshes to study past hurricane activities. He is presently studying the spatial and temporal variations in hurricane activity in coastal Georgia at interannual to millennial timescales and their relationship to global and regional climate changes.
