- Biography
Justin Robinson is an astrophysicist and lecturer in the Department of Physics & Astronomy. He earned is B.S. in physics with an astrophysics concentration from Saint Mary's College of California, then his M.S. in physics and Ph.D. in astronomy from GSU. His dissertation consisted of measurements of fundamental properties of active galactic nucleus (AGN) host galaxies, including distance, redshift, rotational velocity, dark matter, and supermassive black hole masses.
During his time as a graduate student and faculty at GSU, Dr. Robinson has initiated several STEM outreach programs. He co-founded the Georgia Outreach Team for Space (GOT Space; https://gasgc.org/wp/gotspace/), a K-12 STEM outreach program for Metro Atlanta and the broader Georgia area sponsored by and partnered with the Georgia Space Grant Consortium (GSGC). He served as its graduate lead ambassador from 2018-2021, and has served as the faculty lead since 2023. Since its inception, the GOT Space program has visited 40 unique K-12 schools in 6 districts, impacting over 10,000 students. Dr. Robinson also serves as GSU's affiliate director for the GSGC, and has been awarded several grants from NASA to fund the GSGC graduate student fellowship, graduate student travel to GSU's premier research-grade telescopes such as the Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy and the Apache Point Observatory, and the GOT Space program. Finally, Dr. Robinson serves as the program manager for Astronomy on Tap Atlanta (https://astronomyontap.org/locations/atlanta-georgia/), hosting free, monthly astronomy talks geared towards the public given by GSU faculty and graduate students.
Dr. Robinson and his undergraduate research group continue to focus on extragalactic astronomy, distance measurement techniques, and AGN. These studies employ observations from several telescopes around the world, including the Green Bank Radio Telescope, Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes, and the 3.5m Apache Point Observatory Telescope in collaboration with researchers from the Space Telescope Science Institute, Georgia Tech, the US Naval Observatory, and the University of Lyon.
