Gary Hastings
Professor Physics and Astronomy- Education
Ph.D. Photochemistry, 1992, Imperial College, London, UK
M.Sc. Applied Optics, 1989, Imperial College, London, UK
B.Sc. Physics, 1987, Edinburgh University, Edinburgh, Scotland
- Specializations
Vibrational spectroscopy with a focus on applications in biology.
- Biography
The Hastings research lab uses advanced vibrational spectroscopy methods to study a range of biological problems. Time resolved FTIR spectroscopy is used to study solar energy conversion processes in photosynthetic proteins, and reactions in other light sensitive proteins. FTIR microscopy and nanoscopy and Raman microscopy are used to study whole bacterial cells in native and non-native environments, with potential applications from environmental to medical science.
