Dr. Moraes is a physical geographer and climatologist currently working with drought events in the insular Caribbean, their relationship with teleconnections, and their impacts on water resources and agriculture. Her research interests also include the understanding of the atmospheric characteristics of extreme events of precipitation in subtropical South America and their related hazards.

Teaching is a fundamental part of Dr. Moraes career. Since 2010, she has been a teaching assistant and a guest lecturer for physical geography and climatology courses. During her doctoral program at the University of Georgia, she has taught introductory level courses in physical geography and weather and climate as well as served as a lab coordinator and mentor for the new teaching assistants. Dr. Moraes instructional achievements include an Outstanding Teaching Assistant award in 2018 from the University of Georgia. Recently, she has sought to further enhance her teaching effectiveness in online instruction by participating in workshops related to the fundamentals of online teaching and learning, and effective teaching presentations.

Prior to her graduate training in geography, Dr. Moraes worked as an environmental and scientific journalist for O Eco news outlet and was awarded a fellowship from the Climate Change Media Partnership program to cover in loco the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa, in 2011.
