- Biography
I studied psychology as an undergraduate, and researched the acoustic startle response in humans. In graduate school, I continued studying the auditory system as well as the vestibular system, specifically the development and regeneration of sensory receptors in an avian model. I also developed a strong interest in teaching, and was lucky to find teaching positions at Johns Hopkins University, and then the University of Maryland Baltimore County, before coming to Georgia State University in 2003.
I am very pleased to have been given the opportunity to develop my teaching skills here and was recognized with the College of Arts of Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award in 2012. My position as a Principal Senior Lecturer allows me to keep refining my teaching while simultaneously pursuing my related research interests in factors that retain students from groups currently under-represented in the sciences in research careers, as well as evaluation of new modes of instruction.
In my spare time, you can find me at Decatur Makers, a community maker space I helped start in downtown Decatur Georgia, where I like to build things that make noise: tube guitar amplifiers, effects pedals, and CNC'd electric guitars and basses.
