Dean’s Graduate Research Grant
The Dean’s Graduate Research Grant was created to provide financial support for graduate students pursuing professional development, research, and scholarly opportunities beyond the classroom. These opportunities broaden intellectual understanding, hone professional practice, facilitate professional connections, and allow networking with colleagues and peers.

The maximum award amount is $1,000
- Graduate students may apply for any amount up to $1,000
- Graduate students may receive up to two (2) awards during their degree program
- An application does not guarantee support
- An application may receive partial or full approval
- Awards must be used within the fiscal year they're awarded
- The fiscal year runs from July 1 - June 30
Recipients are required to submit a post-award survey after the completion of their research/scholarly activity.

Who is eligible?
- Applicants must be degree-seeking graduate students registered, enrolled, and in good academic standing, compliant with the continuous enrollment policy
- Eligible graduate students are seeking a PhD, MA, MFA, MIS, or MS degree within Georgia State University's College of Arts & Sciences
- Certificate and dual degree students are not eligible
What expenses are eligible?
- Travel to conferences only when the student is the presenting author (attach documentation supporting your presenter status)
- Registration costs for workshops/seminars/skill-building programs related to dissertation/thesis or overall scholarly project
- Other expenditures related to student scholarly projects or research such as books, software, research-related supplies, etc. that have not yet been purchased
- Materials such as books, software, and other research-related supplies that have been purchased recently (receipts required for reimbursement)
What expenses are not eligible?
- Expenses that do not relate to the applicant’s research, scholarly work, or artistic projects
- Purchase of computers
- Student stipends or expenses related to hiring personnel
- Costs associated with program requirements (i.e., fieldwork/internships, clinicals, etc.), board certification, food expenses, background checks, CPR, immunization, membership dues, or expenses related to a study-abroad program.
- Reimbursement for travel that has already occurred
The application should include the following:
- Name, email, address, academic program, start term, and anticipated graduation date
- Students should apply for the award using their @student.gsu.edu email address; all email communications regarding the Dean's Graduate Research Grant will be sent to student email addresses
- Curriculum vitae
- Details of the research, professional development, or scholarly opportunity
- Description of the resources necessary to complete the project or research and plans to access these resources (250-word limit)
- Description of how the proposed research or creative endeavor contributes to your professional development (250-word limit)
- Clearly and concisely convey why the project is important, both within your field and more broadly (250-word limit)
- Address how the project is expected to contribute to the generation of new information, scholarship, knowledge, or creative work
- Total amount requested and detailed budget
- Abstract from the conference (only for presenters; funds will be distributed pending acceptance of abstract)
- Proof of enrollment in the workshop
- Receipts from purchased materials
- Travel dates and destination
- Name and email address of faculty endorsing the application
- Please note that if you are applying for conference travel, the endorsement should come from the PI or Primary Faculty Advisor
Students are required to apply using the Georgia State Scholarship Portal. Please read all instructions prior to applying. Follow the prompts carefully and be thorough.
Once submitted, the application will be reviewed.
If awarded, students will be notified of the award decision within six weeks of the deadline.
If an application is incomplete, inaccurate, or ineligible, it will not be considered for funding. These are the items we will be checking to ensure eligibility and accuracy:
- Matriculation and enrollment status
- Satisfactory academic progress
- Faculty endorsement
- Please note that if you are applying for conference travel, the endorsement should come from the PI or Primary Faculty Advisor
- Record of prior Dean's Graduate Research Grant award
- Confirmation that funding request meets eligibility
- Confirmation of valid receipts for reimbursement
Once grant decisions are made, students will receive notification to their @student.gsu.edu email. This email will contain valuable information and instructions that must be followed in order to process the award. It is essential that students read through this email carefully.
Awards will be deposited into the student account of the recipient. Please note, if there is an outstanding balance on the student account, then the award will automatically cover the balance. Students will only receive a refund if there is a zero balance on their student account.
Once you have submitted the General Application, the Georgia State Scholarship Portal will determine if you meet the criteria for the Dean's Graduate Research Grant. If you are qualified, you will be presented with the Grant as a "Recommended Opportunity." By clicking on "Resume Application," you will be able to complete the supplemental questions.
