Crystal Seldon
Crystal was born and raised in Sharpsburg, Georgia. She is the third of six children. Both of her parents are educators. She attended East Coweta High School. Upon graduation, she received the Netzel Scholarship to attend Georgia State. Her younger sister, Casey, is also a Netzel scholar.
At Georgia State, Crystal has excelled academically and socially. She maintains a high GPA while remaining active in the community and university. She is an Honors Ambassador, STEM tutor, and the Treasurer of Tri-Beta Biological Society. She also avidly volunteers at the Radiation Oncology Department of Grady Memorial Hospital and the Healing Bridge Clinic of Peachtree City, Georgia.
Due to the Netzel Scholarship, Crystal was able to join the lab of Dr. Bill Walthall her freshman year. She has been fortunate to be able to present her research at numerous conferences locally and nationally. Her favorite conference was the Annual Joint Meeting of the American Physician Scientist Association. It was held in Chicago. Crystal is also a clinical research assistant in the lab of Dr. David Yu and Dr. Jerome Landry at Emory School of Medicine.
Crystal enjoys reading (mainly fantasy novels), fishing with her dad, playing volleyball, and shopping. She has also played the piano since she was four.
Crystal’s goal in life is to help underserved populations receive quality healthcare. She plans on doing this by pursuing a career as a physician specializing in Endocrinology. Upon graduation, Crystal will attend Morehouse School of Medicine in the fall. Crystal feels that Georgia State has adequately prepared her to become successful in this field. She states, “At Georgia State, they have provided me with all the tools and resources I need in order to become the research- scientist I aspire to be. Without the Netzel scholarship and the mentors I gained from it, I would not be as successful as I am today.”
