Arts at Georgia State University
Aurora in April II: Vanha Kohtaa Uuden (Old Meets New) is a celebration of the music of both classic and contemporary Finnish composers. The Georgia State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Wind Orchestra, Brass Choir, and University Singers will perform in a concert featuring the music of celebrated Finnish composer Jean Sibelius as well as several contemporary Finnish composers. Sibelius, a prolific composer during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is renowned both in Finland and around the world. 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of Sibelius’ birth.
Sibelius’ Karelia Suite, op. 20 will be performed in an original concert arrangement by Georgia State Professor of Music Robert J. Ambrose. In addition, the concert will feature the world premiere performance of a Georgia State University and Finnish Navy Band commissioned piece by noted Finnish composer and tuba player Matti Laiho. The concert will be conducted by Timo Kotilainen, conductor of the Finnish Navy Band.
Aurora in April II: Vanha Kohtaa Uuden (Old Meets New) builds on the success of the first Aurora in April, which took place in April 2012.
